Excellent harvest ends

Oct 27, 2021

The cutting of the last bunch of grapes, led by the Minister of Rural Development and Environment of the Government of Navarre, Itziar Gómez, officially marks the end of a harvest in which almost 60 million kilos of grapes were collected in excellent condition.

Approximately 60 million kilos of grapes were harvested in excellent conditions. This amount represents a 20% less than that harvested the previous year, meeting the initial harvest forecasts. Only the grapes destined for the wines known as "late harvest" have yet to be harvested. The Denomination of Origin Navarra ends the 2021 harvest with an excellent quality of the fruit. The harvest took place in very good conditions. The harvest began at the end of August and after the initial rains in the first days of September, the weather stabilized, in addition to the very positive arrival of the north wind. The wide temperature oscillation between day and night and the "cierzo" (wind) favored a very good development of the grapes and an excellent end of ripening.

The 10,017 hectares that make up the Navarra Denomination of Origin vineyard have been harvested by 1,750 grape growers and 89 wineries. Red grapes such as Garnacha, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano, Mazuelo, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, and white grapes: Chardonnay, Viura, Garnacha Blanca, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, and Sauvignon Blanc, are used to produce white, rosé, and red wines. "The grapes harvested are excellent, and combined with the work of the professionals we have at the D.O. Navarra, we expect a great 2021 vintage with which to look towards and face the future," states David Palacios, president of the Navarra Denomination of Origin.

The cutting of the last bunch of grapes, led by the Minister of Rural Development and Environment of the Government of Navarre, Itziar Gómez, at the EVENA experimental farm located in Olite, has officially marked the end of the grape harvest. Minister Itziar Gómez congratulated the Navarra Denomination of Origin, winegrowers, and wineries on this campaign: I believe it is fair to recognize the effort that all the agents involved in the chain are making to position our wines as one of the great economic supports of the primary sector, but also of our culture, quality tourism and sustainability, respect for the landscape and territory. Also has highlighted the importance of innovation as one of the levers for positioning the wines of the D.O. Navarra: “I don't want to miss the opportunity to be here at EVENA to emphasize that we continue to invest in research and innovation, something that will undoubtedly allow us to position ourselves in better conditions in a sector as complex and competitive as wine..
