The Designation of Origin hosted the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the international Grenaches du Monde competition, which brought together 80 professionals and nearly a thousand wines in Olite. In this event, Navarra was one of the most awarded regions with 28 medals.
With 28 medals, the Denomination of Origin Navarra was one of the most awarded regions in the tenth edition of the international competition World Garnachas. This contest has summoned 80 professionals of eleven nationalities who analyzed last week about a thousand wines in Olite (Navarra). From May 4 to 6, the Navarra Designation of Origin became the venue for this monographic competition for wines made with the Garnacha grape variety, emblematic of the region. It all began with the reception of the jury at the Royal Palace of Olite, which was attended by the president of the Regulatory Council of the D.O. Navarra, David Palacios, the mayoress of Olite, Maite Garbayo and the president of the Interprofessional Council of the Wines of the Roussillon, Stéphane Zanella. The event, in which white, rosé and red wines made with Garnacha D.O. Navarra were tasted, was closed by the Regional Minister of Rural Development and Environment of the Government of Navarra, Itziar Gómez. The following day, the Estación de Viticultura y Enología de Navarra (EVENA) hosted the celebration of a technical conference entitled: "Getting to know Garnacha" in which the head of the Viticulture department of the organization, Félix Cibriáin made a historical journey of Garnacha in Navarra. The researcher, Pablo Carbonell, spoke about the genome of this variety and the oenologist, Pilar García-Granero, gave a presentation on the ages of Garnacha and its colors.
The tastings took place on May 5th and 6th at the Parador de Olite. On Friday, the first edition of Garnoche, the Great Night of Navarre Grenache, was held with the collaboration of the Pamplona City Council and was a great success in terms of participation. The Weapons Room of the Pamplona Citadel opened its doors to host this event, which brought together two hundred people, full capacity, for approximately 200 references of wines made with Grenache, including 70 from the Navarra Designation of Origin. The public had the opportunity to taste them while enjoying a live performance by Razkin and the tapas made with Reyno Gourmet products. For a few days, Navarra has been the global epicenter of Garnacha, a great occasion to highlight this grape variety so unique to us, which has a great tradition in this land. And so it has been, because Navarra is one of the most awarded regions in the Competition.", says Javier Santafé, managing director of the Regulatory Council of the D.O. Navarra.
