European wine appellations are asking for more priorities and more support for the next European mandate.
Wine appellations of origin have collected in a manifesto the challenges and priorities for the next mandate of the European Union institutions. It has been prepared by the European Federation of Origin Wines (EFOW).
The manifesto makes it clear that the wine sector is strategic for European agriculture and that the appellations of origin are its main backbone. It identifies the challenges that wine appellations of origin will face in the next legislature. The consequences of the crises and trade conflicts arising from the geopolitical situation. Climate change and social changes that modify consumption patterns and consumer tastes.
In this scenario, the wine appellations of origin set the priorities of the European wine policy for the next legislature. They demand that the institutions maintain a specific and solid policy for the sector within the framework of the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy). Strengthen its main regulatory instruments and improve crisis management measures.
The appellations of origin call on the European institutions to reposition the geographical indications (PDO/PGI) and to reaffirm their commitment to the European quality policy. Strengthening their promotion and protection. In addition, they call for continuity in trade policies in third countries. And a depolarization in the debates on health that affect the sector.
