The second edition will be held on September 5th between the Núcleo building, the
medieval passageway and the atrium of the church of San Miguel, with the new findings
from Santa Criz, a tasting of Berués and the concert by Legatum Ensemble.
On Saturday, September 5, the Eslava City Council is holding the second edition of “Legatum: Heritage, Culture and Wine,” a cultural event that will journey through the town's history across different spaces and eras. The activity will begin at the Territorio Eslava Nucleus building, continue through the medieval passageway, and end at the atrium of the Church of San Miguel. The narrative will start at the Nucleus building by traveling to the Vasconic and Roman city of Santa Criz, continue through the medieval passageway, and conclude at the atrium of the Church of San Miguel.
Archaeology, heritage, and music will weave together a single narrative about Eslava's legacy and its capacity to generate activity and a future in the Baja Montaña region. “Eslava preserves an exceptional history that begins before the Roman city and extends to our vineyards and the cooperative winery. With Legatum, we want to tell this story in an interconnected way, because knowing and sharing this legacy generates local pride, activity, and a future for small towns,” notes Estíbaliz Lerga, mayor of Eslava.
The programming will open with the conversation “What did Roman Navarre taste like? Heritage, wine, and identity in the Lower Mountain region of Navarre.” Participants will include the researcher and archaeologist Javier Larequi Fontaneda, and Félix Cibriain, head of the bureau.
of EVENA's Viticulture; and Julián Palacios, director of Viticulture Viva. Their presentations will connect the research at Santa Criz with the evolution of the vineyard and the tourism use of cultural resources. Afterwards, the new findings from the latest campaign at the Vascon hillfort of Santa Criz will be presented. The work has made it possible to recover materials from the Second Iron Age and to identify remains of a monumental defensive wall and domestic structures predating the Roman city. The activity will continue in the medieval passageway, where Francesca Mariani, tourism technician for the Town Council of Eslava, will explain the origin, function, and value of this space. Next, Félix Cibriain will lead a wine tasting of wine made with Berués, a red grape variety documented in 1620 that had nearly become extinct. The activity will provide insight into EVENA's work in locating, identifying, conserving, and recovering historical varieties of Navarrese vineyards. The experience will conclude with the concert “Rome through Cinema” by the group Legatum Ensemble, which will be held in the church atrium, in front of the Núcleo Territorio Eslava building.
