Roots of a millenary history

It has been centuries since the first vines sank their roots in Navarra, marking the beginning of a winemaking history that continues to sprout to this day, a passion for wine that has endured over the centuries, adapting and evolving, but always true to its roots.

5 million years ago

Vitis Silvestris, considered the primitive and original vine, dates back to 5 million years ago. Although this plant has existed since then, its identification in Navarra is a recent discovery made by researchers, highlighting the uniqueness of this region as one of the few places in the world where this plant material has been found.

Middle Ages: 9th-10th centuries

During the Roman period, the first documented records of vine cultivation and winemaking in Navarra appear. Archaeological remains such as cellars, amphorae and funerary monuments confirm the social and economic importance of viticulture in that period. Under Arab domination, this crop continued to expand, consolidating itself as an essential agricultural pillar.

Middle Ages: 14th-15th centuries

In the 14th century, Navarra stood out as an important wine producer and exporter, with a significant expansion of its vineyards. At the beginning of the 15th century, vine cultivation reached its maximum extension, exceeding the limits of Pamplona. However, the need to grow cereal for food led to limiting the space dedicated to vines.

Contemporary Period XIX Century

The 19th century was a period of contrasts for viticulture in Navarra. While the phylloxera crisis in France led to a great expansion in the cultivation and export of wine to the neighboring country, the arrival of the plague in Navarre almost completely destroyed its vineyards. Of the 50,000 hectares cultivated, only 1,500 survived. Thanks to the impetus of the Regional Government, new resistant varieties were introduced, allowing the sector to recover.

News

Today, Navarra has more than 9,000 hectares of vineyards, distributed in five production zones. This region has established itself as a benchmark in the production of high quality wines, combining tradition and innovation to offer a great diversity of unique wines.
