The Control Board is collaborating in the development of an innovative management system to make Navarra a benchmark in the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the region's wine sector.
The Control Board collaborates in the project Smart Sustainable Wine Navarra The objective of this project is to develop a sustainability management system adapted to the vineyard and wineries of the region. Denomination of Origin Navarra. The initiative is led by the Unión de Agricultores y Ganaderos de Navarra (Union of Farmers and Ranchers of Navarra) (UAGN) to launch an integrated sustainable agricultural production in the region that addresses not only environmental, but also economic and social aspects. Promoted by the oenologist Fernando Chivite in collaboration with the Instituto Navarro de Tecnologías e Infraestructuras Agroalimentarias (INTIA) and the Liédena WineryThis system is intended to be exportable to other national and international areas in order to make Navarra a pioneer and benchmark in sustainability. This procedure contemplates the management of sustainable practices such as the use of plant covers, effective water management, energy efficiency or low-impact actions to combat pests.
Commitment to the environment
To undertake this plan during this year, its implementation is being promoted among winegrowers and those who perform their function in the wineries with dissemination activities, conferences and training actions. It is also a sign of the commitment of this sector to respect the environment."says the president of the D.O. Navarra, David Palacios.
The consortium has the technical support of research, innovation and development centers such as Neiker Tecnaliathe Information Center and Business Creation Network (CIRCE) and the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), in addition to the Wine Technology Platform (PTV) that assumes the tasks of communication and dissemination of project results.
Smart Sustainable Wine Navarra was born out of the need to face the demanding European agri-food policies in the aspects of sustainability and the threats of climate change.
