The grape harvest is generalized in all the areas that make up the winegrowing map of the D.O. Navarra and the initial forecasts of quantity and quality of the fruit are fulfilled.
Today, the white and red grapes are being harvested from all the areas of the Denomination of Origin NavarraTierra Estella, Valdizarbe, Baja Montaña, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja. The second fortnight of August saw the beginning of the Navarra D.O. one of the earliest harvests The harvest has been the most successful in history and has progressed at a good pace over the last month. From the beginning, the campaign has been accompanied by dry and hot weather that has caused a rapid evolution of the harvest, caused by the high temperatures. For this reason, work in the field has been carried out during the hours of least heat, so it has been done mostly at night to harvest the grapes as freshly as possible. These practices have allowed the berries to present a perfect sanitary condition and excellent conditions. "After a complicated year in the field in which we have had to work hard, we are very satisfied with the results obtained by our growers, as the quality of the grapes being harvested is very high. We now hope that the final stretch of the harvest will be carried out under the best conditions.. ", says David Palacios, president of the Regulatory Council of the D.O. Navarra.
The first estimates made by the Viticulture and Oenology section of the Agricultural Exploitation and Agri-food Development Service of the Government of Navarre (EVENA) point to a harvest of nearly 76 million kilograms of grapesThis represents an increase of 35% compared to last year's season, which was particularly low. To date, nearly 25 million kilos of grapes have entered the wineries' hoppers. More than 70% corresponds to the Ribera Alta and Baja areas, which are the earliest to harvest the grapes as they are located in the southernmost areas of the region, and then move on to the higher and more northerly vineyards. With these grapes, the D.O. Navarra will make the whites, rosés and reds of the 2020 vintage and future wines for cellaring with light or long aging.
