A good condition of the grapes and uncertainty in the sector characterize the grape harvest that begins in the Navarra Denomination of Origin in localities of the Ribera Baja and Alta with white grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Moscatel de Grano Menudo.
The harvest begins in the Navarra Designation of Origin after a mild spring that has caused some delay in the vineyard cycle. It is estimated that around 63 million kilos of grapes will be harvested, which represents a reduction of 9% compared to the harvest obtained in 2023, according to forecasts made by the Viticulture and Enology section of the Government of Navarra (EVENA). This vintage is characterized by the optimal health of the grapes, after a hot and dry summer. Something reminiscent of harvests of long ago, where the beginning of the harvest was at this time. "We recovered a more traditional harvest in terms of dates, with an ideal sanitary condition and uncertainty in the sector. "David Palacios, president of the Regulatory Council of the Navarra Denomination of Origin, said.
The winter has been characterized by being dry and mild, causing an early start to bud break, which was slowed down by the cold and rainy spring. The white grape varieties Chardonnay and Moscatel de Grano Menudo (Muscatel de Grano Menudo) have started to be harvested in the Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja. From now on, 84 wineries and around 1,500 grape growers will harvest the grapes from the 9,000 hectares that make up the winegrowing map of the Denomination. Due to the characteristics of Navarra, among others, the marked differences in climatic conditions between the five areas that make up the region: Ribera Alta, Ribera Baja, Baja Montaña, Valdizarbe and Tierra Estella, the harvest is staggered and will be completed over the next two months. The grape varieties being harvested and with which the new Navarra wines will be made are the following: white grapes: Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Viura, Malvasía, Sauvignon Blanc and Oneca, and red grapes: Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Garnacha Roya. They are used to produce the famous rosé, red and white wines, which are endowed with great freshness thanks to the privileged enclave, in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, where the vineyards are located.
